Generation Peace Book Club

Generation Peace Book Club was formed to help youths in reviving the importance of reading and developing great ideas into tangible books. For the past 2 years, Denise Morris, Generation Peace Book Club director has been sharing their experience and knowledge on a weekly basis to the students. A video interview with her and the students will be up soon.

Documentary Reel for Paul Robeson Community Center

New Hope Foundation Film & Art Institute has filmed and edited a documentary reel of the history of Paul Robeson Community Center, its past, present and future. The reel also consists a number of parents and students testimonies regarding the last workshop conducted at Paul Robeson Community Center, which received high priase from the participants and their families.

Chase takes over Washington Mutual

On March 30, 2009 Chase took over Washington Mutual to become California's newest bank. Chase employees and community leaders gathered for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on this historic occasion at the Sunset and Vine branch in Hollywood. Chase is investing almost $400 million in refurbishing and rebranding 700 bank branches, 1,900 ATMs and opening 20 more Chase branches this year. Chase Plans to become more “Eco friendly” by refurbish the branches in California using high efficiency HVAC and lighting systems, low irrigation plant landscaping, solar reflectance, recycled materials in walls, floors and ceilings, and Energy Star appliances.

Vedanta International Cultural Center Retreat Lead by Swami Sridharananda

On Saturday March 28, 2009 the Vedanta International Cultural Center presented a special retreat led by Swami Sridharananda, Minister-in-charge, Vedanta Center of Australia. Swami Sridharananda gave an inspiring speech, “The significance of the four Yogas in the present day.” The audience was entertained with traditional Indian music and a piano recital by Vivian Florian, International Concert Virtuoso.

Hollywood Business and Tourism Expo

On March 18, 2009 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce hosted the Annual Business & Tourism Expo in Universal City, CA at the Universal Hilton Hotel.  The Expo drew local restaurants, service companies, businesses and organizations and with some 100 booths there was a great opportunity to network with local business and organizations.  This year’s  theme was “Go Green”,  in line with the city of Los Angeles City Council’s decision to make L.A. a “Green City” and there were many creative booths showing a commitment  to taking care of the environment of the city.

Universal Peace Federation, “A New Beginning,” Brunch

On March 14, 2009 the Universal Peace Federation’s Ambassadors for Peace held a special brunch to discuss upcoming peace efforts and ideas for the new year.  Participating in the event were, Mario Guerra, Mayor of Downey, Keith McCarthy, Ambassador for Peace Southern California Coordinator, Gregg Smith, Universal Peace Federation Secretary General of the Pacific Southwest District, Bishop Timothy L. Henning, Chairman of Universal Peace Federation Pacific Southwest District and many other community leaders.

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Hosts the Oscars Annual Award Media Center

On February 19 and 20, 2009 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce held the pre Oscars Annual Award Media Center for International Media. AMPAS Credentials were required to attend the special event and on February 20 some very special guests were on hand.

The Women’s Club of Hollywood honors world famous actress and long time activist, Tippi Hedren with ‘When a Woman Wills, She Will!’ award

The Women's Club of Hollywood honors world famous actress and longtime activist, Tippi Hedren, on February 7, 2009, with the 'When a Woman Wills, She Will!" award for her lifetime achievements in human and animal rights.  Tippi Hedren, known most notably for her role in the Alfred Hitchcock film, The Birds, and work with Charlie Chaplin, now devotes her time and resources to the Shambala Preserve as a "Den Mother" to over sixty big cats and through "The Roar Foundation" which she founded in 1983 and is currently president.  She has also been the volunteer International Relief Coordinator for "Food for the Hungry" where she traveled worldwide to set up relief programs following earthquakes, hurricanes, famine and war. Tippi spoke for nearly two hours to the capacity crowd at the luncheon while her photographer Bill Dow showed slides of her acting career as well as the big cats of the Shambala Preserve.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa holds the Opening Ceremony for African American Heritage Month held at City Hall on January 30, 2009.  Inside the City Council chambers, in recognition of African American Heritage Month, the Mayor honors actress Alfre Woodard, singer Natile Cole and Reverend James Lawson for their contribution to Los Angelels' rich culture.

On January 29th the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce presented the annual State of Hollywood luncheon with President of the Los Angeles City Council, Eric Garcetti, giving the main address. The Music Box @ the Fonda hosted the event which had a record crowd of attendees.

On January 25, 2009 the Women’s Federation for World Peace held their annual New Year’s Tea at the Woman’s Club of Hollywood. Claudelina Smith, Chairwoman of WFWP, welcomes the guests and opens the event. The afternoon begins with a special tea tasting presentation by Nira Levy Maslin, CEO of Rooibos African Tea. A video presentation of WFWP world-wide projects follows the tasting along with several performances from local artists. Norma Foster, WFWP National Advisor.

Presentation of Eleanor Roosevelt Award to Jewish World Watch for humanitarian relief work in Darfur at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles

On January 15, 2009 at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, Janice Kaminer Reznik of the Jewish World Watch gave an in depth presentation on the current state of Africa’s Darfur region and compared it to the many historical acts of genocide. The Jewish World Watch provides humanitarian relief to regions that are desperately in need and often times risk their lives doing so. Norma Foster, President of the United Nation’s Association-USA Pacific-Los Angeles Chapter was on hand to present the Eleanor Roosevelt Award to the Janice Kaminer Reznik for the outstanding work of the Jewish World Watch.

On January 5th Goli Ameri, Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, speaks on “The Challenges of U.S. Public Diplomacy in t he 21st Century.” Honorable Goli Ameri introduces the 1st official Governmental social networking site, ExchangesConnect, in hopes to promote global Communication amongst the “new generation of digital natives.” An online video contest is being launced to promote the new site and to encourage students to get involved.

Cantor Esterleon and Ivor Peryes perform in duet for the "Concerts for Humanity" on December 30, 2008 at the Matrix Theatre in L.A.

On December 30, 2008 at the Matrix Theatre in Los Angeles, Cantor Estherleon Shwartz, founder of the Temple Beth Shirah House of Song and member of the United Nations Association-USA Pacific-Los Angeles Chapter along with Ivor Pyres held a benefit concert for the L.S. Food Bank. The duo presented the life story of Cantor Estherleon, a child holocaust survivor, in an evening of song, poetry and prose.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Presents Free Screening of “Scrooge” at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the American Cinamatheque held the second annual holiday “gift” to the community on December 20th at the Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. Over 100 people lined up for a free screening of the 1970s holiday classic “Scrooge” starring Albert Finney. Everyone in line was treated to complimentary hot chocolate and were entertained by musical soloist, Laura Nomoto and duet Janna and Danielle, who sung holiday classics.

The Supperclub L.A. gave away 16 turkeys to families at the Yucca Recreation Center on December 19th. Many families came to receive their free turkey and enjoyed snacks and holiday music while waiting.

United Nations Human Rights Day and 60th Anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights In Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles

In recognition of the Dec. 10th United Nations Human Rights Day, prominent city officials including Japanese Consul General Junichi Ihara and Isaac Burks, the Arts and Culture Deputy to Councilman Tom LaBonge of the 4th District, gathered at the Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese Consul General to Lithuania during WWII who saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust, memorial in Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles. International star of film, TV and theatrical arts, Shingo Misawa was welcomed to the city by Consul General Ihara and presented with a congratulatory certificate signed by Councilman Tom LaBonge and Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio, R. Villaraigosa for having received the Eleanor Roosevelt Award in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

United Nations Association-USA Pacific-Los Angeles Chapter presents a UN Human Rights Film Festival in special recognition of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights where 8 organizations and 2 individuals were presented the Eleanor Roosevelt Award and representatives of 30 NGOs and UN supporters gathered for a special reading of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
